A White Christmas

I never dreamed it would actually snow on Christmas here (the last time Cleveland, TN had a white Christmas was 17 years ago), much less snow enough to have any accumulation. Well, someone was certainly looking out for Gavin because when we woke up on Christmas morning, there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground and it was still snowing. For those of you in the Northeast and just got 2 feet, I know 3-5 inches of snow seems like nothing, but around here that is A LOT! After opening presents and breakfast, Mom pulled out all the snow clothes (years of living in PA) and we bundled up to take Gavin out to play in the snow...for the first time in his life!

The dogs LOVED playing in the snow!

This 7 ft tall snowman certainly made up for the rinky-dink one we made a few days ago in the fake snow!
My parents bought Gavin a pair of snow boots a few days earlier because he kept playing with my boots around the house, so he had boots to play in. He didn't, however, have gloves. The smallest we could find were some of Stephen's from when he was about 12. Gavin didn't seem to mind, though ;)

Bundled Up

Bundling up is not something we do very often in Hawaii - to us 70 degrees feels cold and calls for the sweaters to come out. I'm sure you can imagine how we have bundled up each time we have left the house here - with temps hovering around 32 degrees for the week. Here are a few pictures of us sporting our winter clothes (we don't get to wear them often!)

Christmas Morning

Seeing the excitement through Gavin's eyes has made Christmas so much more special now - and even though Dylan won't remember this Christmas - we will always remember 2010 as his first.

Santa has delivered! He left presents under the small tree in the den instead of the big tree upstairs. He must have known it would be more comfortable down here on Christmas morning!

Santa brought Dylan lots of bibs...he goes through about four a day with all the drool now!

Getting Ready for Santa

We spend Christmas Eve day doing what we do every year---the guys did last minute shopping and Mom and I were baking. After dinner it was time to get ready for Santa - Gavin and I baked cookies and it was the first night on this trip that he couldn't wait to go to bed! (Didn't want Santa to pass by the house)

Two Requests

When we told Gavin we would be spending Christmas in Tennessee this year he had two requests for Papaw: He wanted to make a snowman and he wanted to see reindeer. We tried to explain to him that it doesn't snow very often in Tennessee - most winters none at all. Never one to disappoint, my family found out that a place in Pigeon Forge (a town in the smoky mountains) had reindeer and if we drove further into Gatlinburg (a quaint little town in the smokies) we would probably see snow. So, we made the two hour drive to spend the day fulfilling Gavin's requests ;).

We went to Gatlinburg first and took the gondola to the top of the mountain where they have a small ski resort. The only snow there was man made and looked like an icee! For someone that has never seen snow before, Gavin wasn't very impressed.

We could only stay in the snow area for a few minutes because it was for skiers and snowboarders only (the guy checking lift tickets let us take Gavin into the "snow" area though). Gavin wanted to make a snowman, so Mark quickly put together this small thing you see below....Gavin's only response was, "But he needs eyes". Poor kid!
Posing in the snow...thinking it would probably be the only snow we would see on the trip.
Had to get a few pictures of Dylan in his first shoes!
The second request was to see reindeer, so after the "snow" we went back down for dinner and to see the reindeer. There were two there, but were kept in separate cages - don't think Donner and Blitzen were getting along on this night!

Christmas in Tennessee

This year we had the opportunity to go to Tennessee for Christmas to spend time with my family. It has been four years since we have been home for Christmas - before Gavin was born, so well overdue. It has been so wonderful to relax and spend time with family over the holidays (and also get a small dose of winter weather). The boys have both enjoyed being spoiled by Mamaw and Papaw and Uncle Stephen and Mark and I have enjoyed having extra hands to take care of them ;)

The flight here was as easy as can be with two kids. They both slept for most of all our legs - the flights from HI to East Coast are usually red eyes. Gavin has always done great on flights and his little brother certainly did amazing as well!

However, when we got here, Dylan got sick. Not having our pediatrician available certainly makes me appreciate him! We called their office on Monday (our first day here) and told them Dylan had a fever, had runny nose and eyes and was coughing. They advised us to take him to a doctor. (Easier said than done - most doctors don't just take drop ins). As the night went on, his fever wasn't going down so we decided to take him to the ER.

After spending nearly 4 hours (12 am to 4 am) in the ER and probably hundreds of dollars we were told Dylan has a cold. The kicker is that they did chest X-rays, drew blood, did urine analysis, and swabbed his nose for the flu - all to rule out every possible infection and after all of that they didn't even treat him! Their exact words were: "He needs tylenol to reduce the fever but we have a 300% mark up so you can give him some when you get home" I certainly appreciate their honesty and have to admit that I was glad that they checked him so thoroughly to rule out everything....but man, what an expensive trip to the doctor! Mark and I kept saying, "Dr. Ogawa (our pediatrician) would have taken about 5 minutes and told us he had a cold and the bill would be about $30". Oh well.....

Here are some pictures of the better moments of the trip (by the way, Dylan got much better each day and basically just has a stuffy nose now).

Gavin and Uncle Stephen baking cookies from scratch. They did a great job making them, forgot about them in the oven and Gavin quickly learned a new vocabulary word: Crunchy.

Gavin playing Wii bowling with Uncle Stephen and Jennifer. Gavin LOVED Jennifer- he woke up every day asking where she was and spent the entire day talking her ears off!

Dylan is getting to be such a big boy- playing in the walker. He only got to sit in here when his big brother wasn't in here pretending to drive around the house.
Mark and I also took advantage of having Grandparents here and had a date night. We planned on seeing "Little Fockers" after dinner, but halfway through dinner we realized we would need to rush to make the movie so we opted to enjoy our dinner and miss the movie. It was so nice to have a dinner where we could talk to each other and take our time! Thanks Mom and Dad!

Since we missed the movie on our date night, the whole family loaded up to go to a movie the day after Christmas. My parents, Stephen, and Gavin went to see Yogi Bear while Mark, Dylan, and I got to see Little Fockers. Well worth it - funny movie!

Ko Olina Christmas Photos

We went to KoOlina a few weeks ago for family photos now that Dylan is a little older. The same photographer (Nicole Reich) that took Dylan's newborn shots did these for us as well. The day was a little dreary... no bright blue Hawaiian skies, but the pictures turned out pretty well. Here are some of my favorites from the day.
