Lately, our go-to beach has been Tracks (right near the Kahi powerplant, past KoOlina). It probably won't be good for the kids in the winter because of the waves, but in the summer through about October it is perfect (and so very close to home!).
We bought a paddleboard back in August so that's kept us entertained at the beach. The kids love going out on it and it is so much easier to get to the beach than the kayak. And of course, Mark has a new beach toy, which makes him happy :)
