Every month we have the monthly sounding of the tsunami warning sirens - but for the first time in the 10 years we have lived here, the sirens went off for real at 6 am on February 27. Luckily we live in Makakilo where we are not in a flood zone, so our house became an "evacuation site" for several of our friends. Actually, all of Makakilo became an evacuation site- all of our friends up here had a house full and the local parks looked like refugee camps for the morning.
Our "house party" began around 5 am when the Weida's arrived and they were soon followed by the Martins, Ducotes, and Hoffmans. All in all we had 10 adults, 4 kids, and 4 dogs here. The tsunami amounted to a few feet change in the tides, but no damage was caused. By around 1 pm everyone was safe to go home, luckily to a house just as they had left it!
